The Asia Transition Finance Study Group (ATF SG) held the first part of the third learning session (LS3) of 2025 on 16 May (Fri).
The ATF SG hosted the first part of its third learning session for 2025 on 16 May via Zoom, focusing on the development of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in ASEAN.
The Secretariat provided an overview of the current state of SAF globally and regionally, highlighting the potential for SAF production in ASEAN.
The World Bank, as a guest speaker, shared insights from its ongoing SAF initiatives, including the SAF Investment Decision-Making Framework and its applied analysis in Africa. It also introduced financing instruments supporting sustainable transport. World Energy, as another guest speaker, highlighted policy measures driving SAF development and deployment across various countries. They also introduced the Book & Claim system and shared perspectives on discussed opportunities for financial institution involvement.
During the second part of the learning session on 22 May via Zoom, Susenco discussed aviation policies in ASEAN, highlighting the region’s participation in CORSIA (Carbon Offset and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation). The European Commission outlined the EU’s decarbonization efforts, including ReFuelEU Aviation. The World Economic Forum shared insights from its Global Aviation Sustainability Outlook 2025 on aviation decarbonization trends, including SAF capacity, price, and policy developments. They also introduced Airports of Tomorrow, an initiative launched in 2023, which aims to accelerate SAF investments by fostering cross-sector collaboration and public-private engagement.
Both sessions wrapped up with an engaging discussion among participants.
