The Asia Transition Finance Study Group (ATF SG) held the fourth learning session (LS4) of 2025 on 5 June (Thu).
The ATF SG hosted the fourth learning session for 2025 on 5 June via Zoom, focusing on the development of integrated battery energy storage systems (BESS) and distributed networks in ASEAN.
The Secretariat began with outlining the technologies and their critical role in ASEAN’s energy transition. Discussions covered key use cases, challenges such as high upfront costs, the widespread adoption of microgrids/smart grids, and the growing interest in Demand Response across the region.
The ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) shared updates on BESS and distributed networks in ASEAN, including pilot projects and roadmaps. ACE shared strategies to accelerate the adoption of these systems, such as grid modernization, policy development, and fostering public-private collaboration.
The Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) presented an overview of the ASEAN Power Grid (APG), emphasizing the mutual benefits between BESS and APG. It was highlighted that BESS improves the grid's reliability and facilitates renewable energy integration, while the modernization of APG creates opportunities for broader BESS deployment.
Electricité du Cambodge (EDC) presented Cambodia’s power sector progress, including the interconnection of 24 provinces in 2021 and advancements in variable renewable energy. EDC also addressed shared ASEAN challenges, such as meeting rising energy demands and adapting to rapidly evolving technologies.
The session wrapped up with an insightful discussion among participants.
